An industrial relay or interface module can be small, but it often sits between a controller and a field load. Replacing it by appearance alone can introduce an incorrect coil voltage, contact arrangement, load rating or terminal layout. The right RFQ records the electrical role and the installed wiring before a replacement is treated as equivalent.

This checklist is designed for maintenance and sourcing teams handling PLC panels, motor starters, alarms, interlocks and legacy control cabinets. It does not assume that a visually similar relay is a direct replacement. It identifies the evidence needed for a careful model and compatibility review.

Identify the relay’s role in the circuit

First determine what the device actually does. It may be an interposing relay between a PLC output and a contactor coil, a signal isolator, a relay output module, a safety relay or a multi-channel interface assembly. Record the upstream controller or output card and the downstream load.

A relay used for a low-current PLC signal has different selection priorities from one switching a motor contactor, solenoid, heater or alarm circuit. Include a cabinet photograph showing the wiring path and terminal labels. The surrounding circuit is part of the replacement evidence.

Record the exact model and option codes

Capture the complete catalog number, suffixes, coil code, contact code and any module or socket number. Photograph the front marking, side label, terminal diagram and the DIN-rail or panel mounting arrangement. If the relay is part of a master interface module, record the assembly reference as well as the individual relay number.

Do not shorten a model to its family name. Relay families often include AC and DC coil variants, different contact materials, pole counts, suppression options, terminal styles and certifications.

Verify coil or control voltage

Confirm the actual control voltage at the coil terminals and whether it is AC or DC. Record the nominal voltage, allowable range, polarity requirements and whether the control signal comes directly from a PLC, an interface module or a separate power supply.

  • Coil voltage and AC or DC type
  • Coil polarity and suppression requirements
  • Pickup and dropout behavior where relevant
  • Control source and output-card limits

Compare contacts and load behavior

Record the number of poles, normally open or normally closed contacts, common terminals, switching voltage, continuous current and the load category. Resistive, inductive and DC loads can impose different make, break and arc requirements. A contact rating printed on a product page is not by itself proof that the relay is suitable for every load.

For DC loads, note the voltage and current separately. For contactors, solenoids and coils, record the inrush or pickup demand if available. If the relay drives a safety-related or emergency-stop circuit, document the safety architecture and required contact monitoring rather than treating it as an ordinary control relay.

Check the wiring and terminal interface

Compare terminal numbering, socket style, plug-in orientation, wire size, jumper arrangement and the available panel space. Check whether the replacement requires a new socket, a different bridge, a suppression module or a change to the wiring diagram.

Terminal compatibility is a practical boundary. A replacement can have equivalent electrical ratings yet still create rework if the common, coil and contact terminals are arranged differently. Photograph the installed wiring before disconnection and include the terminal diagram in the RFQ.

Review environmental and compliance requirements

Record ambient temperature, vibration, dust, moisture, cabinet cooling and the required ingress or hazardous-area rating. Check the machine or plant standards that govern insulation, isolation, creepage, approvals and labeling.

When the relay is used in a high-cycle sequence, record the operating frequency and expected electrical life. When it is used in a low-energy instrumentation circuit, confirm the minimum switching load. Both extremes can matter even when the nominal current appears small.

Confirm the module-to-system relationship

For a relay interface module, identify the PLC, DCS or remote I/O platform, the channel count and the signal direction. Confirm whether the assembly is a passive terminal interface, an electrically isolated relay bank or an intelligent I/O device. Record the related power supply and fuse arrangement.

Prepare a complete relay RFQ

  • Exact relay, socket or interface assembly model
  • Coil voltage, AC or DC type and polarity
  • Contact arrangement, load type and switching rating
  • Terminal diagram, wiring photographs and mounting method
  • PLC, DCS or I/O module connected to the relay
  • Quantity, delivery country and required timing

If the label is damaged, send close-up photographs together with the cabinet position, terminal numbers, upstream output card and downstream load. A clear evidence package lets the technical review distinguish a reference match from a replacement that needs wiring or application confirmation.

Final replacement gate

Before approving an industrial relay replacement, confirm five interfaces: control voltage, contact function, load behavior, terminal arrangement and system role. If any one remains unknown, keep it as an open RFQ item. The safest comparison is based on the installed circuit and documented ratings, not on housing shape or a familiar family name.
